Geography shaped the Arbër diaspora as much as history. Each community traces its roots to specific Albanian territories, and each settlement zone carries its own landscape, climate, and cultural imprint. Understanding these regions is essential to understanding the people.

Shqipëria / Arbëria
The ancestral homeland of all Albanian-speaking peoples. The medieval principalities of Kastrioti, Muzaka, Arianiti, Dukagjini, and Balsha occupied this territory before and during the Ottoman conquest.
Arbëria e Greqisë
The broad arc of territory across mainland Greece and the Aegean islands settled by Albanian-speaking migrants from the 13th century onward. At its peak, Arvanite-speaking communities covered much of central and southern Greece.
Arbëria e Italisë
Approximately 50 villages across southern Italy where Albanian refugees settled after the Ottoman conquest of 1468. These communities preserved the Arbëresh language and Byzantine Rite Christianity for over five centuries.
Arbëneshia e Dalmacisë
A compact settlement of Catholic Albanian refugees established near Zadar in the early 18th century under Venetian protection. Despite their small numbers, the Arbanasi maintained a distinct identity for three centuries.
Arnautluku
Albanian soldiers, administrators, and merchants spread across the Ottoman Empire over four centuries. Unlike other diaspora communities, the Arnaut diaspora was dispersed rather than concentrated, leaving Albanian-origin families across the entire former Ottoman world.
